Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of approach shafts down to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our safety, shows how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
