Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
