Meteorological Balloons Employed to Illegally Transport Cigarettes Shut Down Airport in Lithuania

Recovered contraband balloons
At least 11 of the meteorological balloons, carrying 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.

Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.

Illegal Goods Seizure

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.

Regional Consequences

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.

Smuggling Techniques

Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

International Concerns

The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.

Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
