Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
